July’s Member Spotlight goes to Vasi’s Taverna for their Athan Kaloidis Memorial Golf Tournament happening August 27th.
Athan Kaloidis was born in a small town in Greece. He came to the United States in the 70s with nothing more than a suitcase. When he moved to Waterbury Connecticut where he met the love of his life, Demetra “Toula” Kaloidis. Together they had two sons, Vasilios and Loannis. Athan entered the restaurant business shortly after coming to America. Then by following his brother’s lead at Waterbury Pizza Castle, he learned the industry inside and out. Years later, Athan made his mark on the community with his welcoming smile and kindness at Spartan Restaurant. Sadly in 2008 Athan suffered from a massive brain aneurysm and was unable to recover. He is greatly missed by his friends and family every day. His family’s love for him is why Vasi’s Taverna has received July’s Member Spotlight.
Athan Kaloidis was also an uncle to Maria Eleni Kaloidis. The two cared for each other dearly. However, Maria was diagnosed with Muscular dystrophy a few months after she was born. Maria continues to work hard every day to stay healthy. When she was nine, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Connecticut granted her wish and sent her to Disney World in Orlando Florida. To honor Athan’s memory every year the Kaloidis Family hosts a Memorial Golf Tournament to help raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Their goal is to help more children around the world like Maria Eleni.
This year’s tournament will be held on August 27th at The Watertown Golf Club. This tournament has raised over $50,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Connecticut in the past and they hope to make this year no different.
